2.5pts Henrik Stenson 20 (keep in play)

2pts Rickie Fowler 44

2pts Jim Furyk 65

1.5pts Brandt Snedeker 75

My plan to wait until closer to the off until backing my main fancy Henrik Stenson has backfired as he has attracted strong support and I'm loath to tip him at 16/1 win only when you can back him at the same price 1/4 12345678. Instead I recommend backing him at 20 and keeping the position in play in the hope of getting matched. He comes into the event comparatively under the radar with much of the attention on Rose and what to expect from Tiger on his return to Hoylake. The Swede's claims are outstanding on a number of counts (his liking for links golf, form, recent tournament stats, Major tournament record, temperament) the only missing piece is a Major on his CV. It's worth speculating that this is his week.

Fowler is another player who appears to relish the challenge of a windy links and like Stenson comes into the event in good nick. He also tends to raise his game for the bigger tournaments, reflected in his 3rd place finish at the World Matchplay, 5th place at Augusta and runners-up spot at the US Open. He's another very much worth keeping onside this week.

Jim Furyk is another proven Open Championship performer with 5 top 10 finishes from 18 appearances and it's notable that at Hoylake in 2006 he was bang in contention going into the final round before Tiger pulled clear. He's slowly but surely rediscovering his form of old and looks to have been underrated.

Snedeker completes the American contingent and in many ways fits a similar profile to the others - he has spoken of his liking for links golf, his last 2 Open appearances have yielded impressive finishes and he's another coming back into form after a spell in the doldrums. Having drifted from around the 50 mark, he's definitely overpriced at 75.
