With no previous course form, the website is our best guide and I am also reliably informed that this isn't a difficult course despite some tree-lined fairways. However, recent rain may mean that players may need to be even more accurate than at first thought and confidence will again need to be at a premium as those outside the qualifying mark for Oman (top-45) will surely be playing under immense pressure.


As far as selections are concerned, I couldn't resist the 150/160 put up for the improving 28-year-old Jacob Glennemo. There is some considerable agreement that Nordic/Scandinavian players do very well in Ireland on the main tour, and I wonder if that may carry through to the second level, a league on which the Swede first appeared in 2013 making a couple of top-25s to sit alongside cuts made around the Scandinavian region.  He used that experience wisely, winning three times on his return to the Nordic Tour and gaining ten other top-10s in his demolition of the rankings.

Early-season form back in this league saw decent finishes - top-20 in Kenya and Turkey- whilst he lay top-5 after two rounds in Madrid and can also boast t-20 finishes in the Czech, KPMG Belgium and the Slovakian Challenge, events that have shown a prevalence for future winner-finding.  Efforts since haven't been ground-breaking but 32nd in Northern Ireland (6th after round one) and a last-time-out 21st in Kazakhstan (another of my marker events) all suggest that he can be a factor if proving more consistent for the full four rounds. This will be the third time I have backed him this year and he'll remain on the radar if not performing this week. He has something, we are just waiting for it to show.


This is probably an event that you could back ten players and not get placed, so the bets are restricted this week (and not just by Corals, ho ho ho, soon be Christmas).  Northern Ireland winner, Clement Sordet, feels this course is similar to Galgorm Castle, and if that is the case, then there is hard evidence for both David Coupland and Simon Wakefield, who both finished in the top-10 in that event and should enjoy the return back to this part of the world.

The latter does look more covincing on recent form with top-20s in his last two events, whilst he can match the Northern Ireland effort with a top-10 in Slovakia. Capable of form at a higher level (top10 at the Lyoness and at Himmerland in 2014, and the same at Leopard Creek and Celtic Manor in '13), it is about time he added to a sole victory way back in 2002. At 75th in the rankings, he needs a very good finish to have any chance of avoiding q-school and a return to a 'home' event may be the key.

Coupland isn't in the same form but ranks around the same mark in the rankings after a steady but unspectacular season. A couple of top-10s (NI and Spain) have helped but that 11th at the top level, in the Lyoness, has really made the difference and gives him a squeak of bettering his 2014 finish of 39th on the R2O. A further measure of the quality of his game came back in 2011 when he took the brilliant Cameron Smith to a play-off in an Australian amateur event, and these types of player never go away, it's just 'when' not 'if'. If he can drop the silly mistakes (top10 after two rounds in Kazakhstan, rounds of 68 and 67 at the GANT) and show the consitency he did with four rounds of 69 and under as he did at Galgorm, he could be big at three figures.

No result would truly surprise this week. Tight course, some premium on accuracy, birdies required, all point to Rhys Davies but that was a pathetic effort last week and he may just be happy taking his card back. Improver Seb Soderberg was close to being a pick after catching the eye when top-5 at the Nordea and the only real challenger to Delpodio throughout the final two days last week, whilst Jimmy Mullen could be anything after a stunning debut at the Dunhill Links last week. Certainly bookmakers can't make up their mind about him (ranges from 28-1 (opened 20) to 66-1) and he is a fascinating recruit to a stage that has seen players explode from nowhere.
